From Coinjock to MP 201.1 on Alligator River, Oct. 31, 2010

(NB: This entry is also out of chronological order; I had it saved in Word until I could get decent Internet.  This one is sent Nov. 7 from River Dunes' Netgear--not powerful enough to transmit photos though.)

This was a nail biter of a day.  The North River borders the Currituck Sound, a huge body of water, and it was a blustery day.  Beautiful, sunny, but with a biting southwest wind of 20-30 knots most of the day.  We made great time, motor sailing with our jenny, but it was another roller coaster ride over deep swells and breaking waves.  Everything in the cabin was in lock down mode, and still things flew around a bit.  No pumpkin squares for Halloween.

In the early part of the trip before it got too wild, I did manage to make hot sausage and cheese on English muffin toast for us to enjoy with our thermoses of hot coffee.  And later in the day, when it calmed down a bit, I heated up some of Chef Glen’s famous squash and sweet potato soup.  That really hit the spot.  We broke out the Halloween candy and treated ourselves.

I was thrilled to see the beautiful eagle on one of the markers.  And to see the 100 mile marker of the ICW.  We found an anchorage along the Alligator R., at the 102 marker.  It is pretty open but should provide protection from the north winds that are expected to blow in around midnight.  The late afternoon was lovely and warm and we took naps in the sunshine in the cockpit while listening to Frank Sinatra on Sirius sat radio.  There’s no Internet connection or cell phone service here.  Did I say, “remote”?

It’s only 8:40, but I have to kill a few dozen mosquitos before I can turn in.  This is a swamp, you know, but so far, no alligator sightings.  Trick or treat and Happy Halloween.  Boo.
